The brass beads are spaced deliberately, and the spacing is the design.

Each one is a Tibetan-style inlay bead from the Kathmandu Valley — brass formed by hand and set with turquoise, coral and lapis in individual cells. Because each fragment is cut and seated separately, the stones sit at slightly different heights and no two beads match exactly.

Between them runs a long line of small black onyx, with gold-capped black rectangles at intervals to break the rhythm. The black does the essential work: it isolates each brass bead so the turquoise and coral read clearly rather than competing.

The length is opera — long enough to pass over the head without a clasp, long enough to double if you want it shorter.

This is the piece someone asks about. The beads have travelled further than most jewelry ever does.
