The focal bead is a small piece of decorative excess, and the bracelet is built to show it off.

It is an inlaid clay bead — a technique associated with Kashmir and Indonesia, in which a clay or resin core is pressed while soft with mirrors, glass cabochons, seed beads and metal findings, then set. Every element is placed by hand, so no two are arranged alike. Under light the mirrors throw small flashes the rest of the bracelet cannot.

Around it run mottled green agate rondelles — sea green through deep forest, marbled with darker veining, and no two beads carrying the same pattern.

Brick-red jasper discs sit between them at intervals. Red opposite green is the oldest contrast there is, and it stops the greens from settling into one another.

Antiqued brass bead caps and small golden green spacers separate everything, which is what keeps a bracelet this busy from reading as cluttered.

Stretch cord, so it goes on in a second. Wear it with cream, camel, olive or denim.

Care: Roll onto the wrist rather than pulling. Wipe with a soft dry cloth, avoiding the inlaid focal bead. Store separately so the mirrors are not scratched.
