It’s the Oldest Jewelry Technique!
Wire wrapping is the oldest jewelry technique there is, older than soldering, and it is defined by what it does not use. No heat, no glue, no cast findings — only wire, hands and pliers: Mechanical, Not Chemical: Every connection is a physical wrap or loop holding a stone or another link in place. Nothing is glued and nothing is melted. The structure holds because of how the wire is bent.
The Wrapped Loop: A simple loop can be pulled open; a wrapped loop is closed permanently by coiling the wire tail back around its own neck. It takes several times longer and it will not come apart.
Work-Hardening: Wire stiffens as it is bent. A maker has a limited number of moves before the metal becomes brittle, so each bend has to be right the first time.
Every Piece Singular: Because the wire is shaped freehand, no two wraps are identical. Pairs of earrings are close relatives rather than twins.
Against Manufactured: Mass-produced jewelry uses cast components and glued settings. Look for a seam, a perfectly uniform curve, or a stone sitting in a bed of adhesive.
A Journey Through History
Before Solder: Wire wrapping predates the ability to join metal with heat. Sumerian, Egyptian and Phoenician jewelry all used wire bent and coiled to hold stones in place.
Roman Adoption: Roman jewelers wrapped gemstones in gold wire for rings and pendants, and Roman wire-wrapped pieces have survived two thousand years intact — a fair test of the method.
A Studio Revival: The technique returned to prominence with the twentieth-century studio jewelry movement, valued precisely because it cannot be automated.
How to Style It
Wire-wrapped pieces show their construction, which is part of their appeal:
Let the Wire Show: A good wrap is a design element, not a fastening to be hidden. Wear pieces where the coils can be seen.
Match the Metal to the Stone: Gold and copper warm a stone; silver cools it. The wire is half the color story.
Handle Gently: Wire holds well but can be bent out of shape by force. Store pieces flat rather than tangled in a drawer.
Every loop, coil and wrap on a handmade piece was formed one at a time with a pair of pliers. There is no machine anywhere in the process, and that is exactly the point.

Care Tips
To maintain the beauty of your pieces:
- Store Properly: Keep them in a jewelry box to avoid tangling.
- Clean Gently: Use a soft cloth to wipe away dirt and oils. Never use dips or ultrasonic cleaners on it.
- Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Keep them away from perfumes and lotions.
